Hydro excavation and hydrovac are the same thing. Some crews say one, some say the other, and if you have been quoted for a hydrovac truck then this is the service you are looking for.
It works by cutting soil with pressurized water and lifting the slurry out with a vacuum. No bucket, no blade, nothing hard swinging near a gas line. Why Anyone Uses Hydrovac Instead of a Backhoe
Because a backhoe cannot tell the difference between clay and a fibre optic conduit.
Water can be aimed. That is the whole argument. When you are working within a few feet of a gas main, an electrical duct bank, or a water line, the question stops being how fast you can move dirt and becomes how confident you are about what you hit.
Our position: near any live utility, mechanical digging is a gamble with a bad payout. A strike costs more in one afternoon than the hydrovac premium costs across a whole project, and that is before anyone gets hurt.
Our Four Step Process
1. Locate and set up.
We confirm utility locates, plan the dig, and protect the surrounding surface before water runs.
2. Cut with water.
Pressure gets dialled in for the soil we are actually in. Loose sand and hardened clay need very different settings, and getting it wrong either wastes the day or damages something.
3. Vacuum the slurry.
Spoil goes straight into the debris tank rather than piling on your site.
4. Waste management and restoration.
The slurry goes to a permitted disposal facility with documentation, and the area gets left tidy.
It Works in Our Winters, Which Matters Here
Western Washington does not give you a long dry digging season. Hydrovac keeps working through cold and sustained rain, and it handles saturated ground better than mechanical digging does, because you are not trying to keep a trench wall standing in mud.

Hydrovac carries a higher hourly rate than mechanical excavation. It is also usually the cheaper project, and those two facts live together comfortably once you count the things mechanical digging adds: utility locates repeated after a strike, restoration of what got damaged, downtime while a line is repaired, and the paperwork that follows an incident.
What drives your number:
- Depth and number of holes. Depth costs more than width.
- Soil type. Hard clay takes longer than sand.
- Access. The truck needs to reach, or hose runs get long.
- Spoil volume and disposal. Slurry is heavy and it has to go somewhere permitted.
- Site conditions. Traffic control and surface restoration are real line items.
